At “Haubi,” Hamburg’s main train station, filmmaker Nizan Kasper meets Noah, an 18-year-old trans person and heroin addict with a penchant for the gothic, punk, and anime. From their time together emerges a portrait that combines conversations, music, detailed topography and analogue photographs with grainy black-and-white stills, split screens and raw handheld footage into an experimental form. By reflecting on its own production conditions, HAUBI creates a documentary that is as transparent as it is empathetic, exploring questions of representation, intimacy and trust. (fh)

Shot on a shaky video camera, Peter Ott’s JONA (HAMBURG) blends social documentary, self-portraiture and biblical prophecy. Together with the substituted Werner, he maps out Hamburg’s class geography by way of the drug scene and urban development. A restlessly referential essay film about filmmaking, controversial drug policies and the theological self-interrogation of a failing filmmaker. A film informed by theory and reality that finds a mercurial, non-simplifying form for complex problems. (fh)
